As part of Durham Book Festival, we are excited to be hosting this fascinating event.

Hayling Island is a working class community in the south of England that has been home to many lives: refugees, tourists, circus acts, smugglers, a destitute Russian princess, and escapees from the industrial mainland. This project brings together short fiction, audio sculpture and digital mapping, along with literary geography, to explore the delicate balance of life in a place where the edges change with every tide.

This event is a work-in-progress sharing. Created by Michelle Green, Caro C, and Maya Chowdhry, with Dr David Cooper, in collaboration with Comma Press.

This project is made possible with the generous support of Arts Council England and New Writing North.

Access information

We regret that TESTT Space – a temporary arts space – is not wheelchair accessible. There are 32 stairs leading up to the performance space. All other venues on the Hayling Stories mini-tour are wheelchair accessible. This work-in-progress sharing will reveal the processes of the four artists at a developmental stage of the project, and will include both fictional and non-fictional spoken word, creative soundscapes and an introduction to the map itself. Audience members will be given the opportunity to feedback their thoughts on what they have experienced. It will be a relaxed performance, meaning that people can move if they need to, tic if they need to, and relax and respond naturally.
