DJAZZ – Durham City Jazz Festival and Empty Shop HQ presents…
…Archipelago, Taupe and Senza Frame.
The first of three evenings as part of Durham’s new DJAZZ festival sees HQ play host to an incredible gig. Pushing the boundaries of jazz and bridging the gap between multiple other genres, this is a stand out gig for musos and jazz heads alike.
Archipelago – 9pm
‘The Joy Division of Jazz’ – Robert Peacock/The Wee Review
A Newcastle sax-bass-drums trio drawing on garage rock, minimalism and free improvisation: riffs, silence, noise and grooves create a collage of hard-edged blocks of sound that evolve over the performance.
TAUPE – 8pm
Taupe are a Newcastle upon Tyne based trio specializing in razor-sharp polyrhythmic play, exploratory improvisation and raw, high energy live performance.
The group’s sound is built of influences drawing from free jazz and math metal to hip-hop grooves and post-bop, with a healthy dollop of skronk, all navigated down a path that seeks to blur the line between carefully constructed rhythmic compositions and explosive group improvisation.
SENZA FRAME – 7pm
Harvesting a new sound, we tear jazz from its roots, introducing electronic grit, impulsive improv, and forward thinking.
Emerging from an established jazz scene, these players combine acoustic kit and keys with electronic synth sounds in a bid to take an old idiom somewhere new.
Think James Blake with Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kaiyote with Mehliana, chilli with chocolate.
