Local gig promoters Down By The River are back for the Autumn/Winter and as ever are programming some great Sunday afternoon gigs at HQ.
Formed in 2015 James Gray Robson & The Lovely Burn are an acoustic folk/old country soul duo who come to Durham’s Empty Shop armed with a bunch of intricately crafted songs, which have something of a Ryan Adams feel about them.
James’ powerful, soul-filled voice which is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and Chris Burn’s tender, atmospheric guitar strike exactly the right balance as evidenced on their most recent release ‘Rule For You’.
Of their writing process Chris states – ‘James pens all the lyrics but the songs can start out with a hook or chord progression on guitar. Ultimately those ideas are taken to the attic where we practice and thrash out the structure, changing the chords and embellishing things until we’re happy with the sound and tempo. ‘I always write from a first person perspective,’ James adds. ‘I try to get inside the character like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson or Springsteen, where they write a film within in a song, allowing you to picture everything. That’s what I aspire to do.’
