Down By The River presents another Sunday afternoon of great live music with Blues musician Scott Wainwright plus support.
Scott Wainwright is a Barnsley based bluesman who has a bunch of tunes that are well crafted, though at the same time, unpolished and unrefined – like Robert Johnson with a Yorkshire accent.
That said, his songs skip through several genres. There’s bits of country, folk and gospel in there, a smidgen of hip hop and even a smattering of Captain Beefheart. Scott is a bit of raconteur too, he comes across as the kind of bloke you’d happily spend time having a few pints with – which is meant as a compliment and perhaps a comment on the honesty that you get with this kind of unadulterated and down-to-earth artist.
‘Bluesman Scott Wainwright is a one man tour de force with great slide-guitar, harmonica and rasping vocals. Songs like ‘Won’t See the Sun Again’ are fantastic. And his between song banter, including how he invented hip hop on his allotment is a riot’. NE Volume.
‘Scott Wainwright is an interesting and talented character who inspires good spirits and he manages somehow to pull off beat boxing, harmonica playing and foot stomping all at the same time.’ The Yorkshire Evening Post.
‘America she speaks to me’ is a dreamy and utterly beautiful welcome to Scott’s world that puts me in mind of Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas soundtrack’. Leeds Music Scene.
‘Barnsley based blues dude Scott Wainwright sings, plays acoustic guitar, harmonica and stomps his foot, creating a rambunctious sound. The music can be described as ‘Goodtime Blues with a touch of hokum’ Blue Sabbath Blues Club, Doncaster.
