Down By The River bring another class gig to HQ as part of their Autumn/Winter programme…

Existing outside of any one genre or scene ’s minimal but distinctive largely electronic set up uses looped vocals and melodic lines to build up a mysterious web of sound that has enthralled and transfixed anyone who has managed to catch her live in recent times. Its foreboding without sacrificing any beauty, experimental but is rooted in the folk tradition.

Swedish born, but now settled in Newcastle Stern says her music is sound focused resulting in what could be described as dark, emotive droney electronica.

Major influences on Stern are filmmaker John Carpenter and Polish composer Kryzysztof Komeda who wrote the soundtrack for the Roman Polanski’s movie ‘The Fearless Vampire Killers’. ‘The Carpenter influence is very clear in one of my tracks which is essentially a homage to him, but it’s more subtle in the rest of my stuff by just reflecting similar sounds. Polanski’s Fearless Vampire Killers was my absolute favourite film when I was eight – I watched it pretty much every week for nearly a year’.

In March Nathalie appeared at Sage Gateshead for BBC 3’s Free Thinking Festival and in July she headlined The Northern Electric Festival at The Cluny so we are very, very happy that she has agreed to bring her unique, experimental ways and means and her multiple loop stations to Durham’s Empty Shop HQ for a special pre Christams show.

Nathalie will be joined by members of Newcastle’s Noize Choir, a group of sound enthusiasts who explore the sonic possibilities of the human voice.

Nathalie has had radio play on Stuart Maconie’s very excellent BBC 6 Music Freak Zone – On introducing ‘A Life’ Maconie said – ‘I love this track’.

‘Poor timekeeping made me miss most of Nathalie Stern’s set, but the song I did see – A Life – was phenomenal’ – NARC

‘I write songs about Norse Trolls’ – Nathalie Stern

We reckon this gig is going to out-freak even the Freak Zone!
