Empty Shop HQ
Frux Tapes // Seagull & Circle

We’re very excited to be welcoming Open Mike Eagle to Empty Shop all the way from Los Angeles, California.

This is his first ever show in the North East.

OME - wide v3.1 - web

Michael Eagle is a busy man, he raps, he podcasts, he hosts a regular comedy night, but mainly he raps. His breakthrough 4th solo album Dark Comedy (2014) made multiple year-end critics lists including in Rolling Stone and remains one of the best rap releases this century.

His brand new album Hella Personal Film Festival is a collaboration with producer Paul White (who’s worked with Danny Brown, Charlie XCX, Homeboy Sandman, Mos Def and others) and saw Mike leave his home-recording closet to lay down his raps in a London studio. The new record continues where Dark Comedy left off. It’s anxiety-riddled but whimsical, addicted to and scornful of social media, stuffed with old wrestling in-jokes and film snippets. Self-aware admissions blend into attacks on societal double standards.

Mike’s received recent support in the UK from BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio One, with Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens both picking him out as a highlight from 2016’s SXSW festival.

LA Weekly anointed him “the hottest thing in indie rap”

Pitchfork said he’s a “whiz with matching easy-going hooks to intimate personal reflection.” and “an MC who cracks wise in both senses of the term”

The 405 “one of the best lyricists in the game and has the audacity to actually have something to say”

The Independent“a welcome dose of no-age hip-hop in direct line of descent from De La Soul”
