PBS webEmpty Shop HQ is a community venue, but every now and then we use the space to programme our own events. Our gig arm, Seagull & Circle, present four carefully curated gigs which are equal part music to social. These gigs aim to further expose Durham as one of the most interesting places in the region when it comes to an eclectic output of contemporary culture, in this case, showcasing some of the best bands regionally, nationally and internationally.

The second in the series sees the return of Paper Beat Scissors, one of the most mesmerising acts to have performed at HQ. The Canadian based singer/songwriter returns as part of his European tour with support from Thornaby’s brilliant Dressed Like Wolves.

Paper Beat Scissors (Halifax, Canada)

Tim Crabtree began Paper Beat Scissors after a move from the UK to the windy isolation of Canada’s East Coast.  ThePaper Beat Scissors live show is an intense and intimate experience – solo finger-picked laments interweave with a haunting voice that slips into the music, then darts back out to pull the listener in.  Having caught the attention of his adoptive homeland with the eponymous debut (mixed by Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara), attention has been swelling on this side of the Atlantic with BBC plays and captivating sets at festivals across Europe (including Wilderness and Rolling Stone Weekender).  No stranger to touring, Paper Beat Scissors has shared the stage with the likes of Sun Kil Moon, Great Lake Swimmers and Clogs & My Brightest Diamond. The electronically-tinged new album “Go On”, recorded by Dean Nelson (Beck, Bat for Lashes), will be released in the UK in February 2016.

– Tom Robinson

“Bright Eyes with Balls.”
– Wolf Alice

“With all the biting humor, incredible beauty and breathtaking fragility of life itself, Dressed Like Wolves’ third full length elevates their handmade folk pop to a new level of glowing imperfection.”
– Luno

“These are guys are already garnering a huge amount of support and BalconyTV expects big things for them.”
– Balcony TV

“Off-centre, lo-fi indie/folk that veers between sweetly spindly to fuzzily meaty, with, as ever, his gorgeously fragile and quivering vocals taking centre stage. And his lyrics remain funny, heart-breaking and bereft of clichés. It’s all rather gorgeous.”
– The Crack

“Thornaby’s perfect purveyors of lo-fi folk pop”
– NARC Magazine
